Chapter Seven

Carolyn saw a warmth in Carter’s eyes she’d only briefly glimpsed before now, and she wasn’t quite sure what had caused the change. A moment ago, he’d looked ready to pull her ex through the phone and throttle him. But now he looked almost desperate for her. She didn’t have to stop and think. When he opened his arms to her, she went to him and pressed her cheek against his chest as he wrapped his arms tightly around her.

His big, rough hand came gently to her temple and brushed her hair back, then he cradled her face to his chest. “He will never hurt you again, Carolyn. I promise you that. Not so long as I’m alive.”

She nestled against his hard chest, brushing her cheek slowly back and forth because she couldn’t get enough of the feel of his solid strength. “He wouldn’t be stupid enough to come after me again. He doesn’t want to go to jail. It’s the company I’m worried about. If the judge gives him half of my liquid assets in the divorce, I won’t have enough to get it off the ground.”

“How much more do you need?” he asked.

“If he gets what he’s going after, I’d be about a million dollars short.”

“And your father…or Kyle? They could loan you that, right?”

She pulled her cheek away to stare up at him. “Would you have asked your father for a business loan? I’d rather be a hobo, eating canned beans and wearing last season’s shoes.”

“Then I’ll give you the money,” he said, and she wasn’t sure she’d heard him right.

“I would be short a million dollars,” she said, feeling embarrassed for them both that he’d misunderstood her.

He gave her a funny look. “I have twice that just from Tuck’s life insurance, and if you include the land, this ranch is worth about fifteen million. I’m sure I can scrape it together. Besides, you could just think of me as a business partner. I’m sure I’d earn it all back and more from Carolyn Ashford Designs. That bedazzled tool-belt dress is going to knock the fashion world’s socks off.”

Talking to Richard hadn’t been enough to break Carolyn. She rarely cried when she thought of her divorce or the fact that her own father admitted he didn’t love her. But Carter broke her. Tears streamed from her eyes onto his shirt, and once they started, they wouldn’t stop.

“Is that a yes?” he asked her.

She squeezed him tighter, wrapping her arms around his waist. “That’s a no, thank you, you amazing man. Come what may, I have to do this on my own.”

He began to pull back to look down at her. “But Carolyn, I can help you. I can give you what you need.”

She brought her hands to the center of his back and laced her fingers together. She couldn’t get close enough to Carter Halston. “You already did, cowboy. No one has ever believed in me so much that he’d hitch his wagon to mine. You can’t know what that means to me.
